AUGUST 2026 RE-COURSING INFORMATION
In August there will be a re-coursing window open from Wednesday 12th August – Friday 21st August to discuss any re-coursing requirements following students receiving their Qualifications Scotland examination results.
Once students have received their examination results and realise they may need to discuss a potential change of subject can you please follow the below steps:
1 – Students or Parents / Carers contact the relevant guidance teacher using the school email address – penicuik_hs@midlothian.gov.uk
2 – Provide the following information:
Forename, Surname, Registration class (e.g. 5L4) and guidance teacher
Day / Time requested for appointment on Wednesday 12th between 14.00 – 16.00 or Thursday 13th between 13.45 – 16.00
Current subject and level (e.g. National 5 or Higher), predicted grade and actual grade achieved
The reason for the change (e.g. need the qualification for University, College, Employment applications)
The relevant guidance teacher will then be available to meet at the requested time unless contact is made to re-arrange the time. The requested change will then be discussed and shared with parents / carers where appropriate before actioning to ensure everyone is happy with the decision.
Exams 2026 – Results and Appeals
Results Day – Tuesday 4th August
This year students can expect their results on Tuesday 4 August 2026. By signing up to My Qualifications Scotland students can choose to receive their results by email, text, or both. To register, students will need their Scottish Candidate Number (SCN) and an email address. The deadline for registration is 5pm on Wednesday 15 July 2026. To register, click here
Students should not come into school on results day, as staff will not be available.

Appeals Process 2026
The Appeals 2026 service will be the same as last year – students can request a marking review of their ‘marked assessment components’ (i.e. exam papers and assignments already with QS). Please note that this is a change to the traditional appeals service; alternative assessment evidence, like prelims and school assessments, will not be used in the process. The service will be free and available to all students. Whilst students will be able to appeal directly to QS, we would advise that they appeal following a discussion with their teacher once school returns after the summer break.
Appeals 2026 will include a priority service for students with conditional offers for further education, training or employment. To use this service you must have an existing offer (e.g. via UCAS) that you can share with QS.
Should I appeal?
If you are considering an appeal for one of your grades, then you are advised to discuss it with your teacher. Whilst you can appeal directly, and no ‘evidence’ is sent by the school, you might want to know more about your ‘breakdown’ (marks) in the exam, and you should consider your performance over the last year before you make a decision.
You must also be aware that proceeding with an appeal can result in your grade going up, staying the same or – in a minority of cases – going down.

Parent/Carer Update 20 August 2025
Dear Parent/ Carer
As you will be aware we sent out some early instructions to students last week for the initial opening period in the enabled 60s block and during that time we did talk about restricted access to the building. This was to keep things as straightforward as possible and ensure young people were not congregating in huge groups in the building and were taking advantage of the good weather. I apologise that this initial communication has caused concern and so am writing to communicate further on arrangements moving forward.
I wish to reassure parents and carers that at all times last week young people were allowed access to toilets, food and where necessary an indoor space e.g. a classroom. The new Bite Site area within what was known as the Green Seats was fully operational and new S1 were given priority to eat food within this area. They were also encouraged to use the supervised green belt area at the back of the school which offered the space to play and has shelter. Further, we have a large number of seats available outside the Bite Site and these are within a covered area.
We have invited young people to make arrangements with a trusted staff member to use their room as a safe space if they return to school and these rooms are recorded in terms of users so we know where students are in school. As promised when we discussed the decant, we also have a range of spaces available for vulnerable students to access at break and lunchtime.
We are now finalising support arrangements for young people during periods of poor weather. This will be completed next week and will involve the use of the large games hall and designated classrooms across floors. As in all situations in the newly enabled space, we are learning from how young people use the spaces and what needs are developing. Our one -way system is helping with the flow of young people around the building and having a controlled entry point on Bellman’s Road has improved security.
If you have any concerns about your child at school, please do not hesitate to contact the school. Whilst I appreciate social media is a common way to communicate in the community, we are not able monitor any queries or concerns being raised on those platforms and I would encourage parent / carers to come directly to the school to have any matters addressed, particularly where you have individual concerns.
