Updated BGE Live Lesson Timetable

Maths Department announcement

As we now start to welcome some of our senior pupils back to school, we have made some changes to our BGE Live Lesson timetable for S1-S3 pupils.  Please check the timetable at the end of this document for specific subjects and times.  Staff will continue to communicate information about Live Lessons via Google Classroom, students should be checking the ‘stream’ section of their Google Classrooms regularly.

Update from Mr Atkinson, Principal Teacher of Maths:

Maths is a subject area where knowledge and skills are built up incrementally. It is very important to have solid foundations and the Maths Department wish to ensure that learners receive feedback at each stage of learning so that misconceptions can be addressed before moving too far ahead with work.

This reduces frustration and prevents learners getting demoralised. This is a major risk if four tasks are submitted at the same time (or a longer task with four distinct tasks) with a misunderstanding in the first task leading to preventable errors in tasks two, three and four.

In Maths, we wish to provide prompt feedback at each stage of learning to ensure that the early bricks provide solid foundations for future learning.  For these reasons the tasks issued in Maths will generally be shorter and have staggered deadlines. Although the deadlines may be closer together than in other subjects, the quantity of work still aims to be in line with the expectations across the whole school.

If you have any queries or issue arising from this update please contact us at:

penicuik_hs@midlothian.gov.uk in the first instance so it can be directed to the most suitable staff member to deal with the matter.

S4 Medic Insight Day 2021

Dear Parent/Carer

I am writing to make you aware of Medic Insight Edinburgh and the completely free-of-charge programme we offer for students in years S4 and S5, or equivalent. We are a group of medical students at the University of Edinburgh and we want to give as many school students the opportunity to gain medical work experience as possible. We run a programme which aims to provide these students with an initial insight into medicine and help students, through our events, decide whether or not medicine is a programme of study they may wish to embark upon.

We run 2 events each year, one for SS4 students and one for S5 students. We are waiting on some information becoming available from NHS Lothian before we can confirm details of our S5 event but I am delighted to be able to share details of our S4 event for this year.

Virtual S4 Day Event

Medic Insight Day 2021 – Saturday 27th March 2021 via virtual platform

Applications for this will open on the 24th February 2021 at 1pm.

The event will consist of talks from medical students and doctors followed by an afternoon of workshops all designed to provide an initial insight into what a career in medicine could look like.

Updates regarding applications will be posted on our website and Facebook page – this is also where the links for applying will become available on the advertised dates.

Website: https://medicinsightedinburgh.wordpress.com

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MedicInsightEdinburgh/

Should you have any queries then please do not hesitate to get in touch or should any students have any queries then I would encourage them to getting touch with us at contactus@medicinsight.com.

Covid 19 Self-testing

Dear Parent/Carer

As you will be aware a key part of the process for re-opening schools to more staff and students is the offer of Covid-19 self-testing to all staff and senior phase students.  We have now received our test kits and are pleased to now be able to offer this service to our staff and students.

Testing is entirely voluntary and is aimed at identifying anyone who is asymptomatic for Covid-19.  Please see attached the following documents:

in the testing programme please read the parent letter and complete the consent form – please note students over the age of 16 can complete the consent form themselves.  The form must be submitted before tests can be issued and should be brought by the student when they come to collect their first test.  Please see the attached collection schedule for the initial collection times.  These will be amended/expanded depending on uptake and the pattern of young people’s attendance in schools.

Yours faithfully

Diane Burgess

Changes to Remote Learning from 16 February 2021

Following feedback from students, parents and staff, we have decided to adapt our Remote Learning programme.  From Tuesday 16 February we plan to resort back to an approach similar to that which we offered in the first week.  Families have told us that our ‘soft-start’ approach was more manageable.  In addition, and outlined below, we now have a series of Live Lessons taking place.  Please note, lessons listed are subject to change.  Changes and/or additional Live Lessons will be advertised to students via Google Classroom but the timetables below should assist students organising their time.

The tables below reflect the days when departments will post work on Google Classroom.  Students should be reminded of the following;

  • Students should be checking all Google Classrooms for updates and deadlines. Students are reminded to regularly check the stream on each Google Classroom; this is where staff and students will post short messages to one another.
  • Students should expect different amounts of work from subjects; this will depend on how many times they would usually have this subject during a normal week.
  • The work issued is not necessarily all to be done in one day, students can manage their own workload. If a student is struggling to manage their workload please raise as a concern with your Key Contact who can put support in place.

You will see we have also introduced ‘Catch-up’ days for our S1 to S3 pupils.  This is in response to feedback received from students and parents over the last two weeks through the contact team and quality assurance surveys. This day may also be a chance for a mental health break for your child where they can spend some time on a leisure activity or connecting with friends and family without feeling anxiety over not working. If your child is still looking for more work on that day we would suggest they access other sites such as BBC Bitesize.  We would note that in general quality is better than quantity and accessing some variety in tasks can break up a lack of motivation. Where a child is struggling to fully engage at S1-3, some focus at least on numeracy and literacy activities would be recommended. If for any reason you are worried about your child progress or mental health please do contact your designated contact team member as soon as possible so we can offer assistance as even with a large team it is not always possible to pick up new issues through the communication cycle.

Congratulations to our YPI Winners!

Every year, pupils in S3 participate in the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI).  2020 could be no different and this year more than ever, pupils saw the importance of helping out their local community.  YPI involves students working in teams to choose a social issue that is personal to them.  They pick and interview a related Midlothian charity, then create a pitch to try to win that charity £3000.  After many months of hard work, judges decided that this year’s winning charity was Re-Act, who were represented by created by Paige Lorimer, Anna McDonald, Alix Rumbellow and Amy Stocks. Re-Act focuses on the delivery of emergency aid to refugees in camps and assists with the resettlement and integration of refugees in Scotland.  A huge well done to all pupils who participated!
