Penicuik High School Achieve a Silver School Sport Award
At Penicuik High School we have worked hard throughout 2023 to increase
participation and opportunities for extra-curricular sport and exercise. We offer
a wide range of different activities during lunchtimes and after school for all
pupils. Coaching for these clubs is provided not just by PE teachers but a wide
range of teachers who have expertise from across the school, making this a
whole school effort.
We are very pleased to announce that the school have achieved a Silver
level award for the Sportscotland national School Sport Award. The online
assessment of the school was completed by our Young Ambassadors Millie
Beattie and Freya Bryan . The process has identified areas where
the school performs very well alongside areas for development. Millie and Freya
together with the Active Schools Coordinator (Scott
Montgomery) and the PE Department will be working
on these throughout the remainder of the school year
toward achieving a GOLD award.
Well done to everyone involved and lets continue to
improve the physical and social wellbeing of everyone
in our school community through sport

Head Teacher Update Mon 30 October 2023
Last week we held our annual Senior Phase Awards Evening for 2023. This event has been reformatted and is now held in October instead of June as it better reflects the attainment of young people in the SQA diet from the previous session. Our Academic Achievement Awards were also a great way to celebrate students working to the best of their ability and ensuring the evening was inclusive. It was also great to celebrate some of the success stories through recognising students who had achieved success in areas such as volunteering and the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. The feedback we received on the evening was very positive and we have also taken on some feedback around the management of the awards to continue to build on the evening and make improvements for the next session. I would like to sincerely thank the following staff for helping and attending the event:
Craig Dewar – for developing and managing the new event
Cal Hind and Ava Fox – for their amazing job hosting the evening
Beth Holwell Ellis – for her excellent administrative support
Office and janitorial staff for their support
Keith Murphy – for technical support with sound and lighting
Morven Murphy – for the two music items by the Junior Vocal group
SMT
Margaret Brandie – for organising the Prize Table
Staff assisting / attending
Sam Preedy
Leigh Wood
Alice Tinning
Sandra Van Aswegen
John Berry
Shannon MacDonald
We look forward to celebrating our Junior Award winners S1 – S3 in June.

Letters were sent in the post on 4 August confirming if your P1 or S1 child/young person qualifies for school transport and the arrangements. P1 and S1 pupils should take their letter to the school bus and show it to the driver on the first day of term. Their school will give them a bus pass in coming weeks. Indicative pick up times and the name of the bus company transporting your child will be available tomorrow (Tuesday) on the school’s website. if you were expecting a letter for your P1 or S1 child/young person and did not get one or you have misplaced your letter please email travelteam@midlothian.
Pupils in P2-7 and S2-S6 who previously qualified for school transport should go to the same stop and get on the same bus as per previous terms. Please use last year’s pass until a new one is issued. If you can’t find the pass, operators will still let your child/young person on the bus. Indicative pick up times and a reminder of the name of the bus company transporting your child/young person will be available tomorrow (Tuesday) on the school’s website.
The travel team is contacting parents and carers of children and young people with Additional Support Needs (ASN) directly about new arrangements. Otherwise the same arrangements will be in place as previous terms for returning ASN pupils.
If your child/young person has moved homes and their previous arrangements no longer suit please contact travelteam@midlothian.
Thanks,
Craig Dewar (he / him)
