SQA Exams – Preparation & Support

Senior SQA Examinations: Preparation and Support
  • All S4-S6 students have now attended year group assemblies to outline our expectations around examination preparation, the supports in place and received their SQA ‘Your Exams 2023’ booklet.
  • Our supported study sessions will still run during the first week after the Easter Break.  These sessions were outlined in our recent study leave letter.
  • We are also finalising our Subject Immersions Days – details will be shared with students and parents/carers immediately after the Easter break.   These days, usually the day before an exam, offer a final opportunity for students to work with class teachers.
  • Together with individual Google Classrooms there are also some online platforms that we would recommend.  Achieve is an excellent online revision resource which supports knowledge and skills development across many subjects. This provides the opportunity to learn, test and track progress. https://achieve.hashtag-learning.co.uk/.  E-Sgoil are running a two week, virtual Easter School. This covers a wide range of subjects.  See the link below for their timetable and sign-up instructions.https://e-sgoil.com/easter-study-support-2023/.
  • Study Leave will begin on Monday 24th April, full details were outlined in our letter last week.

Careers Convention – Thursday 9th March

Once more, we are planning to organise our Careers Convention following the lifting of Covid
restrictions. This event is a feature of our school calendar, with the venue alternating between
Penicuik High and Beeslack Community High School.

This year, the Convention will be held in Penicuik High School and all parents/carers in the
Penicuik area are invited to attend with their children to discuss career matters with experts.

This convention has traditionally attracted a wide range of consultants who give valuable advice
to parents and students on a range of occupations and further/higher education courses.

Invitations have been issued to universities, colleges, apprenticeship providers, service and
manufacturing industries, the armed forces and the professions, the intention being to provide
you and your child with a unique local opportunity to obtain advice on career pathways.

Whilst there may be some value in your child attending the Convention unaccompanied by an
adult, we believe that much greater advantage is likely to be derived from the evening if
students attend with parents/carers to find out more about the sort of opportunities available.

Admission tickets (free of charge) will be supplied to all those who wish to come along and are
available from Mrs Brandie in the Guidance Base. Students only need one ticket per family.

Should you wish any further information please contact Mrs Brandie at Penicuik High School.

Chromebooks Being Issued

Dear Parents and Carers

The information below contains an important update from Midlothian Council in relation to the Equipped for Learning programme and your child being provided with a Chromebook device.

Initially the devices will be rolled out to S4, S5 and S6 pupils. Devices will be given to our S4, S5 and S6 students on Monday 8th November. Further communication will follow at the point of rolling out devices to S1, S2 and S3.

This information also contains an online acknowledgement form that must be completed before your child receives their Chromebook. Please follow the link below and try to complete this as soon as possible. If you have multiple children within S4-S6, please complete the form once for each child.

If your child has an Additional Support Need and therefore already has a chromebook they should ensure they bring this on Monday 8th November as this will need to be returned before they receive their new chromebook.

Attendance during Assessment period – S4-S6

Dear Parent/Carer

With the senior Assessment Schedule now well underway, please once again note the following:

  • In the absence of exam leave this Session, all students are expected to remain in school following their normal timetable, and to return directly to class once any assessments are complete.
  • Students must not leave the building, but should be working towards the completion of remaining classwork or towards improving their evidence for this Session’s provisional grades. If alternative arrangements are required then parents can request these of the Head Teacher directly, in writing.
  • If students have finished all coursework and are returning to school next Session, they should now engage with their next levels of study and can approach staff for direction in this regard.
  • Once S6 students have finished their last assessment, they are free to leave school, but the office should be notified for registration purposes. Any planned activities in connection with S6 leavers will be notified over the next few weeks.

Yours sincerely

Ross Jamieson

Deputy Head Teacher

Senior Photos

S6 Photo 5th May at 10:20am

We have made arrangements for our current S6 students to have their photo taken.  To ensure the photo can happen under current Covid restrictions we are going to have the photo taken at the front of the school building.  S6 students should wear black trousers/skirt, a white shirt and school tie – no jumpers.  Students who have them can wear a school blazer.  Please meet at the front of the school at 10:20am on Wed 5th May.
