Prelim revision timetable

Revising for Your N5 Biology Prelim- Mrs. M’s formula for an A.

All of this plus hyperlinks is also on https://www.edmodo.com/home#/group?id=5443928

Download and print out National 5 Biology Course Support Notes (pages 10-29) which gives the course outline. – This is particularly important because there were some slight changes made by SQA this August. We will draw your attention to these.

You can only be examined on information in the left hand column (LHC) although the information in the left hand column gives further details of exactly what that means. As you revise highlight key words from each key area.

The changes made are listed at

The Standard Grade Credit and Intermediate 2 past paper questions that you should do

Past papers can be found at

http://www.sqa.org.uk/pastpapers/findpastpaper.htm?subject=Biology&level=

and there are the S3 and S4 revision folders on Edmodo that contain more questions on the topics.

Your on line (edubuzz) text book with end of key area quizzes is to be found at

http://nat5biopl.edubuzz.org/

and you can also use BBC Bitesize

I have suggested that you make index cards (these are available in school if you use both sides and write small you should need about 30). Index cards are not the only way. You may prefer a note book or mind maps but you should try to write something as the process of the creation of such revision resources actually drives the facts into your head.

Coming to the revision sessions on Tuesday lunchtime and/or Thursday after school should also help.

The prelim is on Units 1- Cells and Unit 3 Life on Earth only.

Timetable- I suggest that you spend around 2 hours on each of these topics. Spread your time out sensibly between other subjects. Two topics for each of the next four weeks should get you there. This is your homework for biology until the exam.

Topic 1- Revise Sampling techniques and measurement of biotic and abiotic factors (prepare an index card on sampling methods identified in the LHC for each) and energy in ecosystems (prepare an index card for LHC terms and one for the nitrogen cycle). Do BBC bitesize and edubuzz tests. Do corresponding questions from past papers and S3 and 4 Revision folders.

Topic 2- Revise Biodiversity and the distribution of life (prepare an index card on terms identified in the LHC) and adaptation, natural selection and the evolution of species (prepare an index card for LHC terms and one for the sequence of events in speciation). Do BBC bitesize and edubuzz tests. Do corresponding questions from past papers and S3 and 4 Revision folders.

Topic 3- Revise Human impact on the environment (prepare index cards on terms identified in the LHC and one on how fertilisers cause algal blooms and one on bioaccumulation of pesticides). Do BBC bitesize and edubuzz tests. Do corresponding questions from past papers and S3 and 4 Revision folders.

Topic 4- Revise Cell structure (prepare index cards for animal, plant, fungal and bacterial cells) and transport across cell membranes (prepare index cards on the structure of the cell membrane the definition of  diffusion, osmosis and osmosis in plant and animal cells- what happens when each cell is put into different solutions). Do BBC Bitesize and edubuzz tests. Do corresponding questions from past papers and S3 and 4 Revision folders.

Topic 5- Revise producing new cells (prepare index cards for mitosis and cell culture) and DNA and the production of proteins (prepare index cards of the structure of DNA and protein synthesis). Do BBC Bitesize and edubuzz tests. Do corresponding questions from past papers and S3 and 4 Revision folders.

Topic 6- Revise proteins and enzymes (prepare index cards for the variety, shape and function of proteins and one on enzymes and the effect of temperature and pH on them) and genetic engineering (prepare an index card on the process of genetic engineering). Do BBC Bitesize and edubuzz tests. Do corresponding questions from past papers and S3 and 4 Revision folders.

Topic 7- Revise photosynthesis (prepare index cards for the light reaction and carbon fixation) Do BBC Bitesize and edubuzz tests. Do corresponding questions from past papers and S3 and 4 Revision folders.

Topic 8- Revise respiration (prepare index cards for the respirometer, aerobic respiration and anaerobic respiration/ fermentation in animal, plant and yeast cells). Do BBC Bitesize and edubuzz tests. Do corresponding questions from past papers and S3 and 4 Revision folders.
