Modern Languages in the Senior Phase offers students options in French and Mandarin.  Dependent on student uptake German is regularly offered.

Lasswade High School modern linguists prepare for national qualifications at N4, N5, Higher and Advanced Higher level.   Our Senior Phase can contain a combination of S4, S5 and S6 students in the same class.

In S5, most Higher candidates will have moved up from a S4 N5 class.  However, S6 students who are returning to the department having passed N5 in S4 but not continued with their modern language in S5 are welcome and supported as returning modern linguists.

All courses follow the same basic format to allow for smooth progression from level to level and focus on four main themes :

  • Society
  • Learning
  • Employability

The team as welcomes ‘double-linguists’, who will find that learning one language complements the learning of another and that the  study of any modern language will enhance understanding of a student’s own language).

Learning another language has many benefits and makes young people more attractive to future employers and will be an asset on university application forms.  As well as the obvious benefits (being able to speak another language), the world-view of students is expanded and those opting in will develop transferable skills that include; communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creative skills.
