The Broad General Education at Lasswade High School builds on the primary school experience and consists of classes in S1 to S3.

Our S1 course covers 3 significant aspects of learning.

  • Keeping Safe and Hygienic focuses on personal, kitchen and food hygiene and food safety.
  • Developing Healthy Choices focuses on introducing the 5 main nutrients, the Eatwell Guide and how to follow a healthy diet.
  • Textile Technology allows pupils the opportunity to experience fabric work learning the basic skills of measurement, pinning, tacking and use of a sewing machine.

Each unit is split between written work and hands on practical experiences in both the fabric room and the kitchen.  This includes; Keeping Safe and Hygienic homework, Developing Healthy Choices homework and Textile Technology homework

Our S2 course consists of 3 main units:

  • The Dietary Goals: pupils learn about the 9 Dietary Goals and how they relate to Dietary Diseases.
  • Textile Technology: pupils will continue to further develop their pinning and tacking skills as well as becoming more confident when using the sewing machine. Pupils will also have the opportunity to learn more about embroidery and appliqué.
  • Individual Dietary Needs/Food and Culture: pupils learn about individual dietary needs as well as how food influences different cultures from around the world.

Each unit is made up of both practical and written work to allow pupils to build on essential life skills and experiences.  This includes; a Dietary Goals workbook, a Dietary Goals Homework Booklet, Textile Technology Booklet and students choosing their own designer homework exercise

In S3 students have the opportunity to opt into two courses in Home Economics

Practical Cookery and Food Technology

This course is designed to offer development of practical skills and food preparation techniques as well as develop technological skills to make informed choices about food, health and lifestyle. Students will:

  • Become familiar with basic cookery skills, techniques and cookery processes
  • Learn about ingredients, their source, use, nutritional value and impact on health, the environment and global issues
  • Plan and develop simple meals ensuring safe and hygienic practices

The course involves the study of three units

  • Unit 1 – Cookery skills, processes and techniques, good hygienic practices and healthy eating
  • Unit 2 – Food product development
  • Unit 3 – Contemporary food issues

The course will be assessed by self, peer and teacher observations of practical work, together with written evidence of knowledge and understanding.

Fashion and Textile Technology:

S3 Fashion and Textile technology is an introduction to fashion and textiles through producing fashion textile items, developing practical skills, technological techniques and knowledge through a variety of fashion/textile related activities. The course aims to enable the learner to

  • Develop practical skills and techniques through safe use of relevant tools and equipment
  • Investigate, plan, manufacture and evaluate a textile item.
  • Understand the wide and varied career paths within the fashion and textile business

The course is assessed by self, peer and teacher observations of practical work, together with written evidence of knowledge and understanding.
