Modern Studies

Modern Studies

Modern Studies is the study of local, national and international issues.  It’s an essential subject which informs students about some of the most important issues in the world today.  Modern Studies helps students to make informed decisions about things that will shape their future.

Within the Social Studies Faculty we teach the following Modern Studies courses:

S1 Enrichment

This six week course runs on a rota system throughout the year.  ‘Making Decisions’ focuses on the decisions that are made within our school, our local town,  by our local council, and within our entire country.  This course will give learners the opportunity to campaign for and run in a Mock Election focusing on issues which are important to us.

S2 Enrichment

This sixteen week course runs on a rota system throughout the year.  Our course focuses on our wide-ranging society: we will learn about a number of different topics, including stereotypes, sexism, homophobia and ageism.  This course will give learners the opportunity to present to their classmates about topics of their choice.

S4 National 4 People and Society

This course is offered to S4 pupils within the Social Studies option block.  It will give learners the opportunity to discover more about topics of their choice through methods of their choosing.  This course includes three discrete units and a Value Added Task.
