S1-S3 ACTIVITIES WEEK

 REMINDER – CAREERS CONVENTION THURSDAY 12 MARCH 6.30 – 8.30PM

Our annual Careers Convention will take place TONIGHT.  This is open to all S2 – S6 students along with their parents/carers.  Universities, colleges, apprenticeship providers, local employers and the armed forces will be attending.  This is a chance for you and your parents/carers to speak to representatives from various organisations about career pathways and future plans.  Tickets (free of charge) are now available from the Guidance Base.  One ticket per family.

STATIONERY COLLECTION FOR NAMADZI

A reminder to all teachers and students that this is the final week to bring in any new/ good quality used stationary to donate to Namadzi Community Day Secondary School. If you are unable to bring in any stationary please consider donating £1 to put towards posting the items to Malawi! Did you know that East Lothian and Midlothian High School pupils can enter the 2020 event for free?  MYPAS promotes the health and wellbeing of young people in East Lothian & Midlothian offering support to young people as they overcome Greater Challenges  – we recognise that young people running 5K or 10K is an Incredible Challenge so we want to help by making the event free to enter for them.

ATTENTION S5 STUDENTS

“SCIENCE INSIGHTS” 2020 – WORK EXPERIENCE OPPORTUNITY FOR CURRENT S5 PUPILSMONDAY 27 TO FRIDAY 31 JULY 2020

“Science Insights” is an exciting work experience programme from the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine at the University of Edinburgh. Created for current S5 secondary school students (who are returning to school for S6), successful applicants will spend five days (Monday 27 to Friday 31 July inclusive) following a varied programme of activities on four different University of Edinburgh campuses, designed to give a real insight into research and work in biological, biomedical and animal sciences. To apply for a place, speak to Mr Saffhill.

Note that the closing date for applications is Monday 27 April and places will be assigned on the basis of the applications received as well as Widening Participation criteria – NOT on a “first come, first served” basis – by Friday 8 May.

GEOSCIENCES PLANET EARTH DISTINGUISHED LECTURE.

WEDNESDAY 18 MARCH 2020

The School of GeoSciences at the University of Edinburgh has an established annual ‘Planet Earth Distinguished Lecture Series’ where an internationally renowned scientist is invited to Edinburgh.  This year Prof Penny Holliday from the National Oceanography Centre will be delivering a public lecture on Wednesday 18

March 2020 at an evening reception at Dynamic Earth from 18:00 – 22:00.  The event will be of interest to pupils studying geography, computer science, biology, chemistry or physics.  To register, pupils should speak to Mr Saffhill. Please note that as this is an evening event, we recommend that younger pupils are accompanied by an adult.

PRELIMINARY EXAMINATIONS CONTINUE

Examinations are taking place across the school so please try and move around the school quietly, particularly in the Art corridor and around the front areas of the school.

IT users should collect their equipment at the beginning of the day and should be returned at the end of day to the SfL Base.

VANDALISM

There has been a spate of minor vandalism our school over recent weeks.  In particular there has been graffiti and anti-social behaviour that has appeared in your pupil toilets in the English area. Student Notices 29 November 2019

YPI FINAL
On Monday 2 December periods 5&6 – all S2 and S3 pupils will be the audience for our YPI final. Please go to your period 5 class after lunch (unless you are in 2L2 or 3C3 – 2L2/3C3 pupils should go straight to the Assembly Hall after lunch – Miss Lyon and Miss Graham will meet you there) . Your teacher will register you and then take you to the Assembly Hall. You will be in the hall until approx 3pm but remember to bring your jotters etc. for your period 6 class as you will may be back there for the second half of the lesson.

YPI Final Rehearsal
On Monday 2 Dec periods 3&4 – Finalists and Hosts should meet Miss Graham in the Assembly Hall at the start of period 3 on Monday morning. Hosts need to bring their scripts and finalists need to have their final presentations ready to transfer onto the laptop in the hall.

PHONES IN SCHOOL
All students are respectfully reminded about the use of phones in school. If phones are used without permission in class then they will be confiscated until the end of your official school day. If you temporarily need your phone it is your responsibility to return it to the office or senior staff member. If you continually abuse the rules we will contact home and request they pick up the phone.
Could I also remind students that it is an offence to film or record people and then share it regardless of the intent. It is our Policy to involve the Police where there is clear misuse of phones or other IT to bully, intimidate or harass any member of or school community. Thanks you for your cooperation in these matters

LEAVERS HOODIES
Would all S6 please note- it was agreed with the senior student leaders last week that Leavers Hoodies will be worn in school toward the end of session, nearer your point of leaving school in April/May. Therefore I would respectfully request they are not worn to school/ in class as uniform as from Monday 2 December 19. Please be advised that if they are worn you will be asked to remove them and continual refusal to cooperate with staff over this matter will be referred to SMT.

UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH S1 – S3 ART & DESIGN INORMATION EVENINGThe University of Edinburgh is holding its first Art & Design information evening for S1- S3 pupils who wish to find out more about studying an art of design-based subject at University.
The evening will take place on Thursday 5th December from 19.00 – 20.30 at Edinburgh College of Art (74 Lauriston Place, Edinburgh) and will:-
· Provide realistic, first-hand insight into studying these subjects at the University
· Discuss careers within the visual creative industries
· Provide up-to-date information about current admissions requirements
· Provide an opportunity for pupils and parent to ask questions about admissions, studying art/design subjects at university and career pathways.

TREASURE HUNT

On Thursday the 28 of November there will be a winter edition of “find the treasure” game at the link corridor with the prize being a box of strawberry filled laces.  The winner from the last treasure hunt was Cody Jones -3L4, winning with square 3B.

REMINDER – S5 AND S6 CORE PE

EDINBURGH COLLEGE OPEN EVENINGS FOR S3-6

There are three Edinburgh College Open Evenings coming up which you may be interested in attending. These are targeted at 3 distinct groups as follows:

  • S4-S6 Leavers who are interested in college either as a preferred destination or back up pathway to University and may wish to attend with parents/carers
  • S3/S4 pupils who may benefit from earlier engagement with college through their SCP (School College Partnership) Programme
  • S3-S5 pupils who want to explore SCP & FA (Foundation Apprenticeship) pathways.

These events are open to all pupils, parents & carers on the following dates:

  • Thursday 28/11/19 at Sighthill Campus from 4pm-6.30pm
  • Tuesday 03/12/19 at Granton Campus from 4pm-6.30pm
  • Thursday 30/01/20 at Milton Road Campus from 4pm-6.30pm

On the day you should expect tailored presentations from College staff on their curriculum & pathways as well as information sessions with curriculum and campus tours on request.  Current SCP/FA students should already be on campus on each of these dates and are welcome to attend the open evening events to explore options after their SCP course finishes (transport permitting).

NB Please let Ms McLennan know if you plan to stay on and therefore DO NOT wish to get your usual taxi back to Penicuik after your course finishes.  Please go along if you are interested in finding out more about college.

 SPEAKERS OF ANOTHER LANGUAGE

The Modern Languages Department is looking for all speakers of any other language apart from English.  If that is you then please come along to Mrs McEvoy’s room any lunchtime this week!

 

Young Adults Hurricane Book Club

Our school has been asked to be part of a trial of book club in Midlothian. It is open to S2 pupils and above. There are 2 books you would read – I Am Thunder By M Khan and Goodbye Perfect By S Bernard . You then review them. In addition, there would then be 2 after school meetings running 4pm to 5pm on the 5 November and the 21 November. So as well as reading the books there is a bit of extra commitment required because of the after school meetings. If anyone is interested please see Mr Smith in the Library. Thanks.

DRAMA CLUB

Our new Drama Club will start next Thursday, 19th September at 12.55 in the Old Gym. No experience necessary. All welcome. See Mr Laydon in Room 44 if you are interested.

S3-S4 BASKETBALL

Basketball Club for S3-S4 pupils will take place on a Thursday after school in the Games Hall (3:30-4:20) beginning again on Thursday 26 September.

RETURN OF PRACTICAL WORK IN ART AND DESIGN

The deadline for notifying the SQA of which pupils’ Art folios are to be returned is fast approaching (Wednesday 25 September). Could any pupils who wish their Art folio/s returned to them by the SQA please see Ms Dixon in the Art department for a letter. This letter and payment of £5 per folio should be returned to the Art department as soon as possible.  The last day payments will be accepted by the Art department is Friday 20 September.  Many thanks
