S2 ‘CAREERS HIVE’ TRIP
A reminder to all pupils in S2 that the trip to the National Museum of Scotland is tomorrow. Please remember to bring a packed lunch and something to write with. If you get a free school meal we will have lunches from the Bitesite for you. Please attend registration and then head straight to the Assembly Hall at the beginning of period 1 tomorrow. Thank you.
JOBS ROADSHOW 2020
Skills Development Scotland are hosting their annual Jobs Roadshow at Edinburgh Corn Exchange on Wednesday 4 March. This is a great opportunity for S4 – S6 students to meet with employers and find out more about Modern Apprenticeships, full and part time job vacancies. Over 50 employers will be present with live vacancies to fill across a number of sectors. Application and CV support will be available on the day from employers and career advisers. We have a booking in place between 9.30 and 10.30am. If students wish to attend, they need to pick up a permission form from Mrs Brandie in the Guidance Base as soon as possible.
THURSDAY 5 MARCH 2020 IS WORLD BOOK DAY
The English Department and The School Library have this year’s £1 World Book Day book tokens to distribute to pupils. The tokens are valid from Thursday 27 February – Sunday 29 March 2020. When you get your book token, all you need to do is to take it to your local bookseller. Tesco on Edinburgh Road or Sainsbury at Straiton are the closest participating stores and with the token you can get a free book (list below) or £1.00 off any book in store.

“SCIENCE INSIGHTS” 2020 – WORK EXPERIENCE OPPORTUNITY FOR CURRENT S5 PUPILS – MONDAY 27 TO FRIDAY 31 JULY 2020
“Science Insights” is an exciting work experience programme from the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine at the University of Edinburgh. Created for current S5 secondary school students (who are returning to school for S6), successful applicants will spend five days (Monday 27 to Friday 31 July inclusive) following a varied programme of activities on four different University of Edinburgh campuses, designed to give a real insight into research and work in biological, biomedical and animal sciences. To apply for a place, speak to Mr Saffhill.
Note that the closing date for applications is Monday 27 April and places will be assigned on the basis of the applications received as well as Widening Participation criteria – NOT on a “first come, first served” basis – by Friday 8 May.
GEOSCIENCES PLANET EARTH DISTINGUISHED LECTURE.
WEDNESDAY 18 MARCH 2020
The School of GeoSciences at the University of Edinburgh has an established annual ‘Planet Earth Distinguished Lecture Series’ where an internationally renowned scientist is invited to Edinburgh. This year Prof Penny Holliday from the National Oceanography Centre will be delivering a public lecture on Wednesday 18
March 2020 at an evening reception at Dynamic Earth from 18:00 – 22:00. The event will be of interest to pupils studying geography, computer science, biology, chemistry or physics. To register, pupils should speak to Mr Saffhill. Please note that as this is an evening event, we recommend that younger pupils are accompanied by an adult.

The next meeting for the Junior Pupil Council will be Tuesday 25 February, Period 1 in room 26. Any issues with attending please speak to me before Tuesday morning.

INTRO TO COLLEGE GROUP 2 – TUESDAYS P1 AND 2
The next trip to Midlothian Campus takes place TODAY. Pupils should check in with their teachers about what has been missed. Apologies for any inconvenience caused and thank you in advance for your support with this.
The trip to Midlothian campus will run as follows;
Pupils should meet at 9.20am at bottom of the main stairs. Pupils should attend P1 classes until then.
- We will leave school by 9.30am
- We will get the 140 bus from Angle Park at 9.38am
- We will get off the bus opposite Tesco at Hardengreen roundabout and cut through to the college past Tesco via the railway bridge
- We will meet Jasmine at reception at 10.25am
- Tour of the campus until 11.10am
- Leave campus 11.10am and walk back to bus stop on main road by Tesco heading back towards Penicuik
- Get 140 bus at 11.20am Approx
- Back at school by 12noon ideally to return to P4 classes. (If the first bus is too tight time-wise there is another 140 leaving college campus to get bus at 11.38 getting back to Penicuik for 12.22)
